A Poem by my father

I have been reading my dad’s book which is both enlightening and saddening as I remember what a talented writer he was.   This poem is in his book after the part about his first love…it’s so beautiful I wanted to share.

Held Over

And I’m not sure why,

but I write your name

on napkins, wonder where you are

or who you’re with and

try to hate you. I can’t.

I guess I thought we’d love

forever, filling our lives with

fun and dreams, but it

came tumbling down, so

I continue to live my

solitary life, hoping that

between the evening and the light,

the memory of your smile

will grow a little fainter every day.
